To give our hair loss patients meaningful information about how hair loss is inherited, Lee Moon Won Korean Medicine Clinic ran a survey over two months. Here are the results.
The findings are also scheduled for publication in the journal of the Korean Society of Korean Medicine Dermatology and Aesthetics.
The survey covered 438 people, and this is what it showed.
1) 80.16% of people with hair loss have a family history of it.
2) A father's hair loss has a strong influence on his sons.
3) A mother's hair loss has a strong influence on her daughters.
4) Hair loss in grandparents, on either side, has little influence on grandchildren.
5) Female hair loss is becoming more common with each generation.
6) Hair loss used to begin later in life than it does today. In other words, the onset keeps moving earlier as society modernizes.
7) Among people who have hair loss themselves, 36.1% also have a sibling with hair loss.
Participation in this survey was high among people in their 20s and 30s, which gave us a clear read on that age group. We plan to publish a follow-up survey covering people in their 40s and older.
